Tekstil' iz dvukh zakhoronenii greko-rimskogo perioda: issledovaniia 2022 goda [Textiles from two burials of the Greco-Roman period studied in 2022]

This paper introduces textiles from graves 160 (burial 1) and 390 at the Deir el-Banat necropolis in Fayum (archaeological excavations of the CES RAS). The burial rite traces of which have been discovered in these graves allowed scholars to date them to the Greco-Roman period. Thus, the paper highlights technical characteristics of textiles belonging to this chronological group, which are an important applied tool in study of redeposited and destroyed complexes. For instance, a significant number of basket-weave textiles, which completely disappeared in the Byzantine period, is recorded. Particular attention is paid to usage of woolen threads. The simultaneous usage of Z and S twist showed the change in traditions in fiber processing that could be associated with an importation of technologies or with population migration. Among torn fragments of secondary-used items used in mummification process some fragments of a so-called Roman tunic have been discovered.
