Kartonazh zhenskoi mumii v sobranii Natsionalnogo muzeya Respubliki Tatarstan [Cartonnage case of a female mummy in the collection of the National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan]

The article is a publication of a female cartonnage case of the XXIInd Dynasty (inv. no. KП-5404/3) from the collection of the National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan (Kazan). The cartonnage mummy-case, which entered into the Cabinet of Curiosities at the Imperial Kazan University in the second half of the XIXth century, was briefly described by the famous Russian Egyptologist B. A. Turaev. The second publication of this piece was realized only in 1998 in the comprehensive catalogue of Egyptian monuments in the collections of the former USSR compiled by O. D. Berlev and S. I. Hodjash. This publication contains a complete English translation of the inscriptions on the cartonnage case and (for the first time) its photography, but the cartonnage itself has not become the subject of a study. Thus, despite the existence of aforementioned publications, the cartonnage case from the NMRT has actually remained “invisible” in the context of the current Egyptological research of the burial assemblages of the Third Intermediate Period. The present publication briefly traces the history of the item in the museum’s collection, provides a detailed description of its decorative program, as well as a new translation, transliteration and reproduction of the hieroglyphic inscriptions.
