The article analyzes the main stages of scientific biography of an outstanding Russian egyptologist O. D. Berlev (1933‒2000). After completing his studies at Leningrad University, O. D. Berlev, under scientific supervision of Yu. Ya. Perepelkin, was actively engaged in studying social relations during the Middle Kingdom. He unraveled a social layer of so-called royal hemu, which played a key role in labour relations of that time. In 1958 he began cooperation with the Department of the Ancient East of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts. This work resulted in publication of catalogues of Egyptian stelae and sculptures that were included in the golden fund of Russian and world Egyptology. At the same time, developing tools for working with monuments of various periods of Egyptian history, he paid a lot of attention to the Egyptian visual canon, paleography, prosopography. This allowed him to become a triple-threat Egyptologist and to make a number of outstanding discoveries.
